Over the years I have valued the encouraging comments of others, along with the motivational seminars and sayings that have inspired me to give the best effort at whatever task I undertake.
The
first
motivational
speech
that
I
can
recall
was
from
one
of my Grandmothers. As young children we loved to go
to our Grandparents for the Christmas school holidays. They were
2 hours drive away and back in those days we were lucky to manage 1 or
2 visits per year. One day Grandmother set me a task to sweep
clean the concrete paths around the house. I can recall doing
them to a standard that I reckon was fair enough for a 7 or 8 year old,
with an old straw broom. Plus... I reasoned they would soon get
more
sand on them (they lived on an orchard out of Stanthorpe on the QLD/NSW
border) from the
wind and workman boots. When Grandma came to inspect the job she admonished me by saying "that any job worth doing, was worth doing well". Not what I expected to hear at a time when I thought that Grandmothers were all about lollies and favours. But in reality, it was probably the absolute best 'gift' she could have given me at the time.
